Acoem Revolutionizes Gunshot Detection with Single-Sensor Technology
Acoem is transforming the gunshot detection market with its edge-based single-sensor ATD system, creating new high-margin opportunities for security integrators.
In a recent interview, Tim English, managing director for Acoem ATD Technology, joined Dan Ferrisi, group director of content and editorial, industrial and tech at Emerald, to discuss how this innovative approach is making advanced security more accessible and effective.
Unlike legacy systems that require multiple sensors to triangulate a gunshot’s location, Acoem’s technology does this with a single device.
“ATD is unique because we do this with a single sensor,” English tells Ferrisi. “So we have a microphone array inside of a single sensor which can do the detection and the location onboard.”
This design significantly reduces deployment complexity and cost, allowing integrators to strategically place sensors where they are most needed.
This single-sensor approach opens up new markets, including temporary deployments for events, construction sites and retail parking lots. The system can be mounted on mobile trailers, providing flexible security for short-term needs like festivals or school graduations. This creates recurring revenue opportunities for integrators in previously untapped markets.
How Does Acoem Stand Out from the Crowd?
Acoem’s technology is built on decades of military acoustic expertise, dating back to 1995. This battle-proven background informs both the hardware and the sophisticated AI validation model.
“That model is built and trained on actual acoustic gunshot events that we’ve been collecting for decades,” says English. “We have many tens of thousands of different shots fired from different aspects, distances, different calibers. All those things are annotated by hand and all that information can really be used to help improve that model so that we can reduce false alarms.”
By making the technology more affordable and easier to deploy, Acoem is democratizing safety. A single sensor can cover an area equivalent to about 10 football fields, making it a viable solution for smaller towns, schools and remote critical infrastructure.
“ATD has made adding gunshot detection and this instant alert to a gunshot threat really accessible to anybody who’s interested in securing facilities or or responsible for security of some kind of event,” says English.
