Beyond the Security Officer: Healthcare Becomes A New AI Frontier For Integrators

Image
The COVID-19 pandemic surprisingly changed the healthcare system: it also precipitated a radical shift in the security industry, emphasizing the need to integrate human talent with robotic advancements . The need for integration isn’t just a reaction to the stresses on the healthcare system. Along with challenges, such as decreases in full-time staffing and increases in temporary staffing, comes a new awareness that healthcare organizations need innovative, modern security systems that deliver higher efficiency, better response times, and, ultimately, are more gentle on the bottom line. The long-established idea of security, solely dependent on human personnel, is now accepting the revolutionary concepts of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, creating a new normal for how businesses protect their assets. Schools Use IoT Smart Sensors Monitor Indoor Air Quality, Keep Students Safe

Image
When it comes to safety at schools, most people worry about the threat of an active shooter entering school grounds. This is a true concern, but there is also another concern lurking in our schools that is rarely talked about outside of school facility managers. Did you know that there can be harmful chemicals in the air that can make students and staff sick? Indoor air quality (IAQ) can impact a student’s academic performance today and have huge health consequences tomorrow for both students and campus staff members. IoT smart sensors can help schools prevent this from happening. Mold, HVAC Issues, Carbon Monoxide Pose Problems A school’s unhealthy physical environment can play a major role in academic performance. Leaking roofs, mold, lack of fresh air/poor ventilation, carbon monoxide, faulty heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and excessive use of cleaning chemicals can trigger myriad health issues for students and staff members who ar...

Understanding Trusted Time: Its Significance in Network Security

Image
What is Zero Trust? Zero Trust is a cybersecurity strategy that flips the traditional security model on its head. Instead of assuming trust within the network, it operates on the principle of “never trust, always verify.” Zero Trust Architecture extends this approach across the entire enterprise, ensuring that every user and device is rigorously authenticated and authorized before accessing sensitive resources. This means implementing measures like Identity and Access Management (IAM), segmenting the network into smaller, more secure zones, and automating security processes. Why Time Matters One often overlooked aspect of network security is time synchronization. Imagine if every clock in your house showed a different time; chaos would ensue. The same applies to computer networks. Discrepancies in time settings can disrupt logs, telemetry, and critical processes, rendering them ineffective. This underscores the importance of accurate time synchronization across the network. What I...

Hardening Access Control With Biometric Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Image
Across the security industry, demand for two-factor (2FA) or multi-factor authentication (MFA) is rising. A decade ago, most considered it appropriate only for high-security and government installations. Today, it’s standard for logical security and software applications. Next up will be mainstream access control. Related: Selling Biometrics Is Selling Convenience Independent research predicts the market for MFA solutions will grow by $9 billion between 2020 and 2025. In a world in which the public feels increasingly vulnerable, MFA not only makes people feel safer; it actually delivers. MFA severely limits the possibility of unauthorized users entering a property using a borrowed, stolen, or cloned credential. It requires individuals to provide at least two of the following to authenticate their identity: Something they know , like a PIN or password Something they have , like an access card or mobile credential Something they are , meaning a unique biometric like a fing...

Active Shooter Situations in the Workplace: Surviving the First Five Minutes

Image
Have you ever been shot at with a firearm ? Did it happen outside or in a confined space, such as a building? If it happened inside four walls, the experience is not one you will soon forget. The noise, confusion, denial, panic and slow reaction time shared by victims of active shooters can diminish your chances of survival. And survival is your prime motivation. Related: Shooter Detection Systems Joins Partner Alliance for Safe Schools (PASS) You may not realize it, but, during an active shooter event, both law enforcement and students/employees remain at risk during an evacuation when the shooter has not yet been clearly identified. Marking or disabling an active shooter helps police keep everyone safer. As security solution providers, we generally don’t offer a way for an innocent person — under threat of clear and present danger — to defend themselves against an attack in the first five minutes. We generally focus on detect, deter, delay and document criminal events. Is i...
