Selling Biometrics Is Selling Convenience

Image
Like any new technology, security tech takes time to enter the mainstream. Early iterations are usually inelegant and pricy. Products require finessing. Stakeholders must feel it solves a real problem better than the established alternatives. Plus, the sales channel must be motivated to sell it. During the past two decades, many new technologies have gained wide acceptance within the security market by meeting these three criteria. The growth of analytics and automation, Cloud-based video and access systems, mobile credentials and smart home devices are leading examples. They have become increasingly reliable and affordable, customers are demanding them, and security integrators are eagerly adding them to their portfolios. Biometric identity solutions, however, have needed more help breaking into the commercial physical security space. Why should that be? The public welcomes the convenience such solutions offer. For proof, look no further than cellphone use: 80% of smartphones have b...

Defending Against Next-Gen AI Devices

Image
We’ve talked about robots and how they can take over the world. We’ve seen apocalyptic movies and novels that pit man versus machine in epic fights of good versus evil. Current geopolitical and environmental issues have evolved in maturity and capability where cyber defense/and cyber offensive strategies are being used not only in military confrontations, but corporate boardrooms as well. As we think about the current cryptocurrency meltdown, economic and supply chain instability, we face a new dimension of threats that require rethinking and developing new out-of-the-box concepts to identify and defeat adversarial technologies. Consider artificial intelligence (AI) and what a long way it has come during the past five years. Attending the ISC West show at that time, one encountered manufacturers and security integrators that touted capabilities within video surveillance and access control products with proactive detection and video analytics that were AI-based. At that time, clarific...

Small Dealers Can Benefit From Industry Roll-ups Boom

Image
If I had one person who I could just sit around with and brainstorm ideas, particularly about the security industry, it would have to be Stanley Oppenheim. He’s the owner of DGA Security in New York City, and he and his son own Affiliated Monitoring, also in New York. I’ve only known Oppenheim for 50 years; there are a few people still around who have known him longer. An SSI Industry Hall of Famer , Oppenheim achieved legendary status as an entrepreneur, a builder of security businesses, and a brilliant thinker. Even though he is admired by security dealers worldwide, he is down to earth and will always take the time to answer a question about our industry. I interviewed him eight years ago for this column, and he still remembered the topic (learning how to just say “no,” sometimes). This time I did not have a script or a list of questions or anything else that would give me a head start in the conversation we were about to have. I called him at an appointed time in April and ...

Saying Aye to AI

Image
Attending ISC West during the period in which SSI ’s annual AI Issue was produced could not have been more timely as the loudest buzz (cynics might say hype) around what appeared to be this show’s most robust turnout ever was unquestionably artificial intelligence. This makes sense as AI is going to transform the way modern society lives, works and conducts business across industries. Electronic security — with its access control, video surveillance and other systems’ capacity to aggregate large datasets and its mission to safeguard people and assets — is near the top of that list. AI holds the key to realizing dreams like the elimination of false alarms, real-time response, and even predicting and preventing incidents. The prospects are astounding and game changing. No wonder on the ISC West expo floor, to varying degrees, most of the largest and familiar vendors, and especially newer entrants, promoted either AI-centric products or the incorporation of the technology into their pro...

Legal Briefing: Limitation of Liability Clause Gives Pause

Image
It is generally accepted that the exculpatory clause (which eliminates damages for breach of contract and negligence in a contractual setting) and a limitation of liability clause (limits damages to a nominal sum) are not enforceable when gross negligence or willful misconduct is alleged and subsequently proved. The limitation of liability clause was designed as a back-up to the exculpatory clause. When an all-damage waiver would not be enforced, the thought was to limit the damages, typically to a nominal amount; $250 is industry standard. These clauses are the subject to most challenges to the “printed” alarm contract. To address the anticipated challenge in advance, both provisions were modified in Kirschenbaum Contracts by excluding gross negligence and willful misconduct from the provisions; in other words, accepting liability for gross negligence and willful conduct. These are not abstract legal concepts, though they are defined differently from state to state. In New York, it...
