How LiDAR Could Have Prevented the Louvre Museum Jewelry Heist

Art thefts have always captured public imagination, blending intrigue, high stakes and cultural loss into a single narrative. The recent heist at the Louvre Museum, where thieves allegedly made off with priceless Napoleonic jewels in broad daylight , was no exception. In just seven minutes, the criminals used a construction platform to bypass security at one of the most prestigious museums in the world, smashed display cases and disappeared on scooters before security could react. The audacity and precision of the operation left many wondering: Was it preventable? The answer may lie in an emerging technology that could modernize museum security: LiDAR. LiDAR, short for light detection and ranging, is a technology that uses laser pulses to map environments in three dimensions with remarkable accuracy. By providing real-time spatial awareness and detecting even the smallest changes in an environment, LiDAR could have created a security system capable of stopping the Louvre heist bef...

How Critical Communication Tech Protects Lives and Assets

Imagine a fire alarm that doesn’t sound during an emergency or a help point in a parking lot that fails when someone needs it most. Critical communication technologies—like voice alarm systems, intercoms and help points—are designed to protect lives and safeguard assets. But if they aren’t available and reliable at the exact moment they’re needed, the consequences can be significant. That’s why ensuring these systems remain fully operational at all times is a critical responsibility. When Traditional Managed Services Fall Short Many organizations depend on system integrators to maintain and monitor these systems through managed service contracts. Traditionally, this has meant scheduled site visits, manual system checks, and reactive maintenance when something breaks. The problem? Failures often go undetected between inspections. Maintenance is reactive, not proactive. Scaling across multiple sites requires excessive time, travel, and manpower. For organizations that rely on ...

Steve Lucas, VP of Sales, HID’s Mercury Security: Best Advice

Today in the Best Advice Q&A series, we talk to Steve Lucas, vice president of sales at Mercury Security, part of HID Global. He shares the best advice he’s ever heard, how he mentors industry newcomers and who has helped him most in advancing his career. Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Steve Lucas: Build for trust before you build for scale. Every decision in this business — technical, commercial or operational — is a trust decision first. That’s how I lead teams and how I evaluate roadmaps. It’s tempting to chase the next feature or the next big logo and assume trust will follow if you execute well enough. In reality, trust is the precondition for everything else to work over time. In access control, we safeguard identity and movement. If integrators, end users and partners don’t trust how we design controllers, protect credentials or communicate about vulnerabilities, nothing else matters. Trust shows up in quiet ...

Budgeting and Forecasting Without the Overwhelm: Finance 101

Budgeting and forecasting are your financial GPS. When you drive your car, you need to know where you’re going; you wouldn’t set out across unfamiliar terrain without at least some guidance. The same is true for your business. A solid budget or forecast not only tells you where you’re headed but also helps you map out the best path to get there. It can clarify when to hire or restructure, when to invest in technology, and when to strengthen your banking relationships. In short, a good forecast becomes your guide for smart, confident decision-making. Every budget or forecast begins with a clear understanding of expected revenue. Best practice is to evaluate your key customer relationships, their financial health, and when they’re likely to place (or pause) upcoming orders. Track your progress frequently, I recommend at least weekly, and be ready to adjust your targets when you overperform or underperform against goals. Once you have a revenue outlook, use it to shape your cost of go...
