Sal Mani, VOLT AI: 2025 Security Reflections and 2026 Predictions

We close out the year with 2025 security industry reflections and 2026 predictions from Sal   Mani, co-founder and head of safety and security at VOLT AI. He looks back at the year that was in the physical security space and ahead to what changes could be in store for the next 12 months and beyond. Security Sales & Integration: What has been the most surprising development in the security industry this year? Sal Mani: The most surprising development in the security industry this year is that artificial intelligence quietly stopped being “just analytics” and became the operating system of physical security. For decades, we argued over camera brands, badge types and VMS features, and now the real power has shifted to the software brain sitting on top of it all. In 2025, AI is not just drawing boxes on video; it is triaging alerts, drafting incident summaries, guiding operators through playbooks, coordinating robots and drones and squeezing new value out of old cameras that...

Today’s Best Advice Q&A comes from Jake Voll, president of the SS&Si Dealer Network. He shares the best advice he’s ever gotten, how he elevates young security industry pros and the person whose advice carries the most weight for him. Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Jake Voll: “Be patient.” Early on, and frequently throughout my career, I found myself frustrated by what seemed like slow progress towards reaching my goals. I was putting in the work, building strong relationships, and growing my team, but I rarely saw the immediate results I wanted. Whenever I felt burnt out and disappointed, Dad would tell me to be patient and to just keep doing my thing. He was right. Hard work done right does pay off but it takes time. SSI: What advice would you give to those looking to achieve success in the security industry? Voll: Learn everything you can from people smarter than you and be generous sharing what you know with...

Security Sales & Integration: What kind of year has 2025 been for the electronic security and physical security industries? Peter Giacalone: 2025 was a robust year on many accounts. Technology adoption appears to come in a more expedient manner than in previous periods. M&A remains strong with continued beefy valuations. SSI: What has been the most surprising development in the security industry this year? Giacalone: With the great misunderstandings and overwhelming overuse of the term “artificial intelligence”, I am pleased to see the mindful adoption of AI in a variety of applications. I am especially motivated to continue to experience how central station monitoring companies are adopting a variety of AI initiatives, including conversational AI. SSI:...

Drew Levine, Chief Operating Officer, Allied Universal: Best Advice

We continue our Best Advice Q&A series with Drew Levine, chief operating officer, East, for Allied Universal. He shares the best advice he’s ever gotten, how he boosts security industry newcomers and the voices who echo in his mind most often. Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Drew Levine: I was blessed to work for my father, Murray Levine, from 1988 to 1996 and then as an advisor for an additional 25 years. He was an industry icon and a key executive in the building of The Wackenhut Corporation, which was one of the nation’s largest private security firms founded in 1954. In that journey, there was one constant: tell the truth. It sounds so simple and I’m not suggesting our industry doesn’t tell the truth. However, the truth includes what you can do, what you can’t do, what it would take to accomplish something, what frontline workers need and should have – the list goes on. His demand was simply telling the truth to who...

Security Sales & Integration: What kind of year has 2025 been for the electronic security and physical security industries? Tim Palmquist: 2025 has been a year of fundamental transformation for our industry. We’ve moved beyond thinking of ourselves as purely in the security business to recognizing that we’re increasingly in the business intelligence business, with security as a crucial component. The year brought steady growth amid continued evolution toward hybrid and cloud video management systems, while major technology players like AWS, Azure and NVIDIA deepened their commitment to our space, validating the immense value locked within security data. We continue our series of 2025 reflections by security industry heavyweights with a contribution from longtime Business Fitness columnist and Matterhorn Consulting  founder and principal  Paul Boucherle. We’ll share Boucherle’s 2026 predictions for the security industry in January. Security Sales & Integration: What kind of year has 2025 been for the electronic security and physical security industries? Paul Boucherle: 2025 has been a positive year overall for the security business. The uncertainty of supply chains started with gnashing of teeth, hand-wringing, fear and uncertainty with tariffs. I felt this was short-sighted but a necessary correction in more equitable global trade terms. Most importantly, I think end users understood the project completion and price adjustments/variables were out of security integrators’ hands. SSI: What has been the most surprising development in the security industry this year? Boucherle: The most surprising was the over-hype ...

Smart Video Surveillance Storage: The Forgotten Factor for AI Performance and Accuracy

Image
Powerful artificial intelligence video analytics are changing demands around surveillance installations, including higher camera resolutions, automatic detection and identification of objects, insights that determine intent and more. AI-enabled cameras are more sophisticated today than ever before. They one-up older generation cameras through their ability to transmit multiple streams of video and metadata which are necessary to enable AI functionality of the system. These new, super-smart video capabilities are changing the game. Choosing the right cameras is one thing, but the right storage is necessary to get the most out of the cameras’ features. The conversation is shifting from “what should we install?” to “how do we build the right infrastructure to unlock all this intelligence?” System integrators need to be aware of these evolving IT infrastructure requirements if they want to make the right recommendations to their customers, grow their business and meet rising customer de...

Future-Proof Fire Safety

Image
Every fire incident poses a significant risk to people and buildings, and effective preventive measures safeguard lives, minimize property loss and reduce downtime. Turning reactive measures into proactive protection helps keep people and organizations prepared for the unexpected. Modern buildings are more complex than ever, but many still rely on legacy fire protection systems that have not evolved with changing regulations, emerging technologies and growing operational demands. Outdated infrastructure often lacks the flexibility to support digital operations, and older systems can no longer guarantee reliable alarm transmission and monitoring. At the same time, compliance pressures are intensifying: stricter regulatory standards from organizations such as National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Underwriters Laboratory (UL) and General Services Administration (GSA) — coupled with new cybersecurity requirements — continue to raise the bar, leaving facility and IT leaders under m...

To me it means: Don’t leave a mess for others to clean up (work responsibilities, parental/family responsibilities, community responsibilities, etc.) What am I leaving in my wake that will negatively impact someone else? What are the long-term effects of my actions/decisions that someone else is going to have to deal with later?
