5 Steps to Building an Award-Winning Security Brand

In a crowded industry where most security dealers and integrators offer similar hardware at comparable prices, your brand is often the only real differentiator. We’re not just talking about a logo or catchy tagline, but how you communicate with your audience online, on the job and in every interaction through your marketing. If you want your brand to become truly synonymous with “security” in your market— a position usually held by national giants, you don’t need a massive budget. You need clarity, consistency, and the willingness to put in the work. Here’s how to build an award-winning security brand. Determine Your Security Marketing Story You don’t need to be a self-proclaimed storytelling expert, but you do need to define what your brand stands for. This goes beyond who started the company or how long you’ve been in business. Focus on your why and how. What kind of company are you trying to build? What do you want to be known for? Start simple. Write down three to five traits...

Michael Hanlon, Vice President, Allied Universal: Best Advice

The latest entry in our Best Advice Q&A series is Michael Hanlon, vice president of hosted and managed services for Allied Universal Technology Services. He shares the best advice he’s ever heard, how he helps security industry newcomers get acclimated and the person to whom he will never stop listening. Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Michael Hanlon: It is not as much advice as it was a realization.  When remote video monitoring and managed services were in their early days, I had long conversations with industry pioneers, including Brad Gordon and Bill Bozeman, where we discussed the need for integrators to build a recurring monthly revenue (RMR) model. At first, it was the understanding that integration companies sold for lower multiples than alarm companies because alarm companies had monitoring contracts to drive up their valuation. Over time, this mindset evolved and the reasoning and business modeling for host...

Resideo to Separate ADI Business to Form Distinct Public Companies

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Resideo Technologies, Inc., today announces the organization’s  intention to separate its ADI Global Distribution   business  through a tax-free spin-off to Resideo shareholders. Upon completion of the separation, Resideo’s Products & Solutions business (P&S) will continue to operate as Resideo. As part of the deal, ADI will become an independent public company. Why Resideo and ADI Are Separating Resideo has instilled strong operational discipline across the enterprise, says president and CEO Jay Geldmacher, in the joint announcement. This, he notes, has resulted in “independence for each of ADI and P&S.” ADI is a global wholesale distributor of low-voltage products, including security and audiovisual solutions. Meanwhile, P&S is a building products manufacturer focused on residential controls and sensing solutions. “We believe a separation is the next, most natural step, allowing ADI and P&S the opportunity to unlock th...

Where Does It All Begin?

Have you ever pondered where a product or service starts? I realize that this might be a chicken-or-egg conversation. But consider a company or a monitoring center at its roots and how it arrived at a point at which it succeeded or perhaps failed, and you wondered why it failed. The companies that get to say that they’re part of the “Best of the Best” usually didn’t get there by accident; it was the result of a disciplined approach to how the organization grows and is run. That discipline becomes even more important as you start to scale up and increase products, services and the required support to assist users or providers. A Monitoring Center on Every Corner When I first started in this business, it seemed as if there was a monitoring center on every corner; most were small and covered smaller geographical areas, mostly because of the limitations of copper wire from the monitoring centers to the protected premises. In the mid-’70s, the digital dialer was born and it all changed....

Tim Palmquist, Vice President, Milestone Systems: Best Advice

Today, our ongoing Best Advice Q&A series shines the light on Tim Palmquist, vice president at Milestone Systems. He shares the best advice he’s ever been gotten, what he tells aspiring security industry professionals and who has helped to guide him in his career and life. Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Tim Palmquist: “It’s time to stop making spreadsheets and start reading them.” For most of my early career years, Microsoft Excel was my professional love language. I put every idea, proposal, opportunity and plan through a thorough analysis in Excel. Data was the driver, and this tool empowered me to analyze and communicate almost daily. Looking back these were my “integrator” years–the years being deep in the details, armed with the numbers, confident in analysis. But there comes a time in your own professional development that you can add more value to the organization by letting others vet the data and build the ...

Conceal Browser Native SSE Obsoletes VDIs, VPNs

AUGUSTA, Ga.— Conceal has officially launched what it says is the world’s first Browser-based security edge solution: Browser Native SSE. The Georgia-based company says that its latest solution replaces VDI (virtual path identifier), VPN (virtual private network), and legacy SSE solutions while securing users’ browsers. Conceal suggests that its Browser Native SSE delivers fast, secure access to any application from any browser, anywhere in the world. According to the company, legacy remote access tools like VDI and VPN were never designed for today’s hybrid, high-speed workforce, and legacy SSE only adds complexity and latency by forcing traffic through remote infrastructure. “This isn’t an evolution. It’s a hard reset,” says Eric Cornelius, CEO of Conceal . “We’ve ripped out the complexity, stripped away the latency, and put secure access where it should have always been—in the browser. It’s fast, invisible, and built for the way work happens today.” Conceal Browser Native SS...

Unlocking Data: Turning Access Control into a Business Tool

The world of siloed systems is fading. As end users move away from maintaining multiple systems, preferring to have one piece of software that unifies video, access control and other devices, they’re also asking for ways to turn that raw data into actionable insights. The good news is that access control systems have the capabilities to meet those demands. Let’s look at three broad capabilities that security integrators can use to guide customers beyond unlocking doors toward a long-term strategy of extracting maximum value from their access control systems, while solidifying the integrator’s role as a strategic partner. Flow Modern access control systems can help simplify the flow of people within an organization. Linking cardholder data to HR databases or doors and other devices to facility information databases can help teams better understand and facilitate day-to-day operations. For example, contractual employees can be given temporary credentials based on responsibility whil...

In Search of Competence, Part 4

Over the past three months, we have explored different levels of competence that your team members might exhibit. Each level of competence growth stands on the shoulders of the previous level of competence. How well team members embrace and pursue the next level of competence is up to them, as well as you as their leader. The next tier up is Unconscious Competence (UC). At this level, people do not become bogged down in overthinking a challenge; instead, they simply get it done without wasting time or creating any drama. They make difficult tasks and challenges look effortless and easy without much conscious thought. How is Unconscious Competence Possible? How is this possible? It’s mostly muscle memory, years of experience learning from mistakes, and being able to adjust thinking and responses in real time. An example would be someone who can hold a conversation while performing a high-speed, complex driving maneuver, all without panicking or breaking out in a sweat. The most ...

The ASIS Foundation is well-known around the world for the research it pumps out and the grants it delivers to security professionals and organizations who are looking to advance their careers and boost the security industry as a whole. But all of that research and all of those grants don’t pay for themselves. It takes a lot of financial support and backing from friends and families of the 30,000 global members to keep the foundation growing stronger every year and supporting more and more causes and initiatives every year. The biggest and most popular of those fundraising efforts is the ASIS Foundation fitness challenge. “The the idea is we all get sponsors which vary in amounts, and then we go out and we we try and walk, run or bike or dance, if we wish to, as much as we can as far as we can, in order to raise as much money as we can, ,” says ASIS Foundation chairman Martin Gill. There are individual prizes for those who do the most to get themselves in better shape, he says, ...
