John Sullivan, Sr. VP, Strategic Accts., ADI | Snap One: Best Advice
Today’s installment of the Best Advice Q&A series features John Sullivan, senior vice president of strategic accounts for ADI | Snap One. He shares the best advice he’s ever been given, how he helps security industry newcomers advance in their careers and which industry icon should be the focus of your attention at all times.
Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
John Sullivan: Everyone has unique strengths and weaknesses, and you should use them strategically to elevate your team. Instead of trying to make everyone excel at everything, focus on identifying the top strengths of each individual and help them grow in those areas. At the same time, recognize where they may fall short and intentionally build a team that complements those gaps.
This approach not only allows people to operate in their zone of excellence, but also fosters collaboration, trust, and efficiency. Great teams aren’t made of perfect individuals. They’re made of people who know how to leverage one another’s strengths and support each other’s growth.
SSI: What advice would you give to those looking to achieve success in the security industry?
Sullivan: There’s no shortcut to success in the security industry. It takes integrity, a strong work ethic and a well-rounded team. This is a field built on trust, so your reputation is everything.
Work hard, but also work smart. Surround yourself with people who bring diverse strengths to the table — technical expertise, strategic thinking, customer insight — and empower them. Success isn’t about being the smartest person in the room; it’s about building a team that collectively raises the bar.
Stay curious, stay humble and stay committed to solving real problems. The industry is always evolving and those who succeed are the ones who adapt, listen and lead with purpose.
SSI: If you could point to one person in the security industry and tell up-and-comers, “Make sure to listen to what they have to say,” whom would you pick and why?
Sullivan: John Loud, president of LOUD Security Systems, is someone I consistently point to as a model of leadership in this industry. He leads with humility, integrity, and a deep commitment to both his community and the profession at large. What sets John apart is his ability to surround himself with exceptional talent and empower them to drive the business forward. He understands that great leadership is about building great teams.
John is also a generous mentor and contributor, always willing to share insights and support others in the field. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to grow, listening to John means learning from someone who has built a respected brand through values-driven leadership and strategic vision.
