Today’s installment of the Best Advice Q&A series features Brandon Niles, vice president of  2021 and 2022 SSI Installer of the Year Acadian Total Security and Acadian Monitoring Services. He shares the best advice he’s ever gotten, how he helps security industry up-and-comers and the person others should take constant note.

Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Brandon Niles: The best leadership advice I ever received was from our late founder, Richard Zuschlag. He taught me that true leadership starts with surrounding yourself with people who inspire you, challenge you, and bring out your very best. Leadership isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about building a team you trust and creating an environment where everyone can thrive.

SSI: What advice would you give to those looking to achieve success in the security industry?

Niles: One of the best steps you can take is to get involved in different associations. The security industry is fortunate to have several well-established organizations that offer comprehensive resources, valuable content, and opportunities for growth across various sectors.

These associations make it easy for members to engage at their own pace, whether through educational events, networking opportunities or leadership roles. By participating, you’ll not only stay up to date on industry trends but also build meaningful relationships with peers and mentors who can support your professional journey.

SSI: If you could point to one person in the security industry and tell up-and-comers, “Make sure to listen to what they have to say,” whom would you pick, and why?

Niles: While there are many exceptional professionals shaping the security industry, I believe the real value for up-and-comers lies in seeking out diverse perspectives rather than focusing on a single individual. The landscape of security is extensive and constantly evolving and the most influential leaders often emerge from different areas, whether it’s technology, policy, operations or education.
