Today in the Best Advice Q&A series, we hear from Paul Donahue, president of global security services and chief operating officer at Constellis. He shares the best advice he’s ever heard, how he helps security industry newcomers raise their personal profiles and who serves as his inspiration.

Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Paul Donahue: Do you ever practice tying your shoelaces? It took me a while to understand this, but the message was clear sometime later: there is a difference between the routine and repetitive actions necessary for homework, job duties or exercise, but were these routines performed without clarity and focus and therefore, not performed as well as they could be.

SSI: What advice would you give to those looking to achieve success in the security industry?

Donahue: Security works best when you don’t see it, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a balance between visible deterrence value and the security operations centers that have hidden eyes and rapid response availability to keep the bad guys on their toes.

SSI: If you could point to one person in the security industry and tell up-and-comers, “Make sure to listen to what they have to say,” whom would you pick and why?

Donahue: Drew Levine. Drew is an icon in the security industry. He has 35 years of security experience within the largest U.S. and International companies ever built and operated, in both public and private settings. He has been a mentor to me during my 31 years of practicing security.

Drew comes from a long line of security professionals, including his father, Murray Levine who recently passed. Murray developed the Custom Protection Officer business in the 1980s to help lift the value offering and image of security services. Drew took these learnings and added to them to blaze his own successful path in our industry.
