Elli Reges, Director, Learning and Development, SIA: Best Advice

Today, we turn the Best Advice Q&A spotlight on Elli Reges, director of learning and development for the Security Industry Association. She talks about the best advice she’s ever heard, how she helps security industry youngsters make their way up the career ladder and who inspires her with both words and actions.

Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Elli Reges: My dad always told us growing up, “everything in moderation.” As a new mom, I find myself coming back to that advice often. Whether I’m juggling work, family, faith, friendships or trying to carve out a little time for fun, his words remind me to keep things in balance.

His advice has really helped to keep my priorities in perspective during stressful times so I don’t pour too much into one area at the expense of another. It’s a mindset that helps me regularly check in on my physical, spiritual and mental well-being so I can continue showing up as the best version of myself—for my family, my team and myself.

SSI: What advice would you give to those looking to achieve success in the security industry?

Reges: Find what interests you and become an expert. There are many exciting facets to this industry, and it is ripe with opportunity for new perspectives to come in and shake things up. This industry is heavily driven by relationships and referrals, so when you develop specialization, you naturally become the go-to person others turn to when they have an opportunity or need advice.

Take advantage of knowledge sharing opportunities with tenured security professionals who have helped to shape the industry and begin crafting a pathway for yourself that builds upon the legacies of other trailblazers.

SSI: If you could point to one person in the security industry and tell up-and-comers, “Make sure to listen to what they have to say,” whom would you pick and why?

Reges: Lynn de Seve, founder and president of GSA Schedules, Inc. Lynn is a past member of the SIA board of directors, SIA Women in Security Forum Steering Committee and several other subcommittees. She is a recipient of the George R. Lippert Memorial Award, SIA Chair’s Award and Statesman Award.

Lynn launched her business at a time when few women were represented in the industry—and she has paved the way for others through her success and unwavering commitment to giving back. A true servant leader, she’s often the first to step up and offer her support, whether through volunteering, mentoring or simply sharing her insight.

With so much industry knowledge, Lynn is one of my go-to people for business advice. She’s authentic, honest and the kind of person you genuinely want to learn from.
