Andy Cutler, VP, Communications, ASIS International: Best Advice

Today in the Best Advice Q&A series, we hear from Andy Cutler, vice president of communications for ASIS International, the organization behind the annual Global Security Exchange (GSX), which will host its 2025 edition in New Orleans later this month. Cutler talks about the best advice he’s ever heard, shares the way he helps to guide security industry newcomers and reveals the person to whom he listens to most often.

Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Andy Cutler: The best advice I ever received was this: align your work with something greater than yourself and never miss an opportunity to lift others as you climb. Fulfillment doesn’t come from titles or tasks; it comes from making a difference and helping others.

SSI: What advice would you give to those looking to achieve success in the security industry?

Cutler: If you’re aiming for success in the security profession, don’t try to go it alone. Find a mentor—or a few—who challenge and support you. The ASIS Security Leaders Mentoring Program is a wonderful resource.

Get actively involved in ASIS International global chapter network and subject matter communities; they’re not just resources; they’re catalysts for professional development.

The most successful professionals I know built their careers through shared knowledge, strong relationships, and a deep commitment to collective advancement.

SSI: If you could point to one person in the security industry and tell up and comers, make sure to listen to what they have to say. Who would you pick and why?

Cutler: Eddie Sorrells is a standout figure in the security industry, embodying a rare combination of frontline experience, legal expertise, and global leadership. He began his journey over three decades ago as a part-time security officer with DSI Security Services, steadily rising through the organization.

Today, he serves as its CEO, having previously held roles as chief operating officer and general counsel, overseeing operations across thousands of employees. His career path is a powerful testament to dedication, operational excellence and strategic growth.

Beyond his executive leadership, Eddie is widely regarded for his deep insight across legal, operational and strategic domains. He authored “Security Litigation: Best Practices for Managing and Preventing Security‑Related Lawsuits” (2015) and his expertise has been featured in national outlets like The Wall Street Journal.

As a frequent speaker at local, regional and global security events, he regularly addresses critical issues ranging from workplace violence to employment law.

Eddie also holds the rare distinction of being triple-certified by ASIS—CPP, PSP, and PCI—reflecting his breadth of knowledge across protection, physical security and investigations. He has served in key roles within major industry associations, such as ASIS International where he will serve as president in 2026.
