Today’s entry in the SSI Best Advice Q&A series is Manish Dalal, president and founder of ZKTeco USA. He shares the best advice he’s ever heard, how he eases the transition for security industry newcomers and who’s the best person for others in the space to meet.

Security Sales & Integration: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Manish Dalal: In the security industry, you have to think long-term and, for that, staying the course and having patience and persistence is of prime importance. In todays fast-paced, hyper-connected world with overexposure to information, it is very important to filter the noise and not getting distracted.

The best advice I have received is: listen to the customer, solve their problem at an affordable price and learn how to multiply over time.

SSI: What advice would you give to those looking to achieve success in the security industry?

Dalal: The security industry has been growing steadily and is a recession-proof industry. However, the definition and scope of this industry has seen a big change in last five to seven years, where physical and cybersecurity are blending together very quickly.

In order to stay in this industry for a long time, it is very important to learn and develop your skills to talk to the chief security officer, chief information officer and chief executive officer at the same time. In addition to that, if you do not have a global perspective of the solution which you are offering, it will be very challenging to get into bigger projects as customers of every size have a global footprint.

SSI: If you could point to one person in the security industry and tell up-and-comers, “Make sure to listen to what they have to say,” whom would you pick and why?

Dalal: I would suggest to follow Lee Odess as he brings lot of industry folks on a single platform where the exchange of ideas and information is freely shared. He gives his unbiased opinion and also connects with the wider community of all age groups.

He is also very approachable and goes above and beyond to help this community.
