Almost 40% of Companies Have No Workplace Violence Plan: ASIS

Recent research by ASIS International shows 14% of companies had no comprehensive plan to address active assailant workplace incidents and no intention of creating one, according to a recent MarketWatch report. Another 25% indicated they didn’t have a plan regarding workplace violence but were looking to develop one.

The ASIS workplace violence survey was conducted in partnership with Everbridge, a software company that works in the security space, according to the MarketWatch report.

According to the Office Safety and Health Administration, 458 homicides occurred in workplaces in 2023, the most recent year for which such data is available. That’s a decline from 2022, when 524 homicides took place, according to the MarketWatch report.

MarketWatch puts those numbers in context, noting about 20 people are killed annually in the U.S. from lightning strikes, meaning you’re at least 20 times more likely to be killed at your job than to die by lightning strike.

Businesses Don’t Prioritize Workplace Violence Prevention

When MarketWatch asked C. Joshua Villines, who serves on ASIS International’s global board of directors, about the 39% figure, he said, “Frankly, any number above zero is an unacceptable amount.”

Safety professionals tell MarketWatch it’s even more confounding when you consider how many schools conduct active shooter drills for students, including those as young as pre-kindergarten age. These drills are mandated in at least 37 states, according to one report, but only California requires companies to create a safety plan addressing workplace violence — and that’s a relatively recent requirement, the MarketWatch report says.

“It’s like walking through a minefield,” Matthew Dumpert, managing director at financial and risk solutions provider Kroll, tells MarketWatch. “You just haven’t stepped on a mine yet.”
