ANSI 60-Day Public Comment Period Now Open for TMA-ATN-01 Monitoring Center Notification of Active Threat Detection

McLEAN, Va. – The Monitoring Association (TMA) Standards Committee has received confirmation from ANSI that the public comment period for its TMA-ATN-01 Monitoring Center Notification of Active Threat Detection is officially now open through April 1 at 8 p.m. ET.

“The development of the Active Threat (Detection) Notification (ATN) Standard by TMA represents a significant advancement in the classification and reporting of ATN events, benefiting both the security industry and public safety sectors,” says TMA-ATN-01 Standard Committee co-chairman Mark McCall in the TMA announcement.

“The standard outlines a uniform approach to handling active threat events, acknowledges, integrates various detection technologies, and provides detailed guidelines on record-keeping, data management, and process monitoring,” he says. “By categorizing threats into actionable groups based on confirmation levels, public safety can prioritize their responses more effectively, potentially saving lives by addressing the most critical situations first.

“Overall, the goal of this standard is to significantly enhance the synergy between the security industry and public safety, fostering a safer environment through more informed and rapid responses to active threats,” says McCall.

Inside the TMA-ATN-01 Standard Public Comment Period

ANSI guidelines require that standards development committees have proper “balance” so that no single interest category dominates the group or process to the exclusion of fair and equitable consideration of other viewpoints, according to the TMA announcement.

The TMA-ATN-01 Standard Committee engaged in the creation of the draft standard was comprised of 46 representatives from a broad scope of key stakeholder communities including public safety, which had significant participation. Other stakeholders included monitoring centers, systems manufacturers, emergency notification manufacturers, and service providers, as well as other types of large public/private management organizations.
