How to Protect Campus ID Cards from Flipper Zero Hacking Threat

As consumer-grade hacking devices become more powerful and accessible than ever, educational institutions are facing a growing physical security threat; one that doesn’t involve breaking locks or forcing doors. Instead, it takes advantage of outdated access control systems that many schools have trusted for decades. One such consumer-grade hacking device is the Flipper Zero, a once-niche gadget for hardware hobbyists that has gone fully mainstream. For around  $200 , anyone — regardless of technical expertise — can purchase this pocket-sized device and use it to exploit widely used campus  access control systems with ease. With just a brief wave near a lanyard or backpack, the device can clone an ID card in seconds, enabling unauthorized access to dorms, dining halls, or academic buildings — all without triggering alarms or raising suspicion. This isn’t just a theoretical concern. On many campuses, misuse of devices like Flipper Zero is already occurring. Students and othe...

Louvre Museum Heist Offers Wake-Up Call for AI-Enabled Surveillance

Last month, four thieves executed one of the most audacious museum robberies in modern history . Two men in yellow safety vests used a truck-mounted lift to reach the balcony of the Louvre’s Apollo Gallery at 9:30 a.m., cut through a window with a power tool, smashed display cases and escaped on motorized scooters by 9:38 a.m. In just seven minutes, the thieves stole more than $100 million in historic jewelry, including an emerald necklace gifted by Napoleon Bonaparte. In the process, they exposed a global truth: the world’s most visited museum could only record, not prevent, the crime. It would seem logical that the yellow vests and an oddly placed lift would have registered some level of alarm. Unfortunately, the museum’s historical treasures were guarded by outdated surveillance methods, including a paltry number of obsolete cameras. Post-incident investigation revealed that 75% of the Richelieu wing had no active CCTV coverage. And nearly two-thirds of the Sully wing, which hous...

How Security Fences Make Schools Safer from Curb to Classroom

Often safer school design conjures images of school buildings that use advanced technology and building materials to deter, delay and deny violent intruders, from state-of-the-art surveillance systems to forced-entry resistance glass doors and windows. But enhanced school security begins at the perimeter fence, well before the building façade. K-12 safety and security start at the district level and includes multiple layers and protocols for keeping faculty, students and visitors safe from violent threats, according to the  Partner Alliance for Safer Schools ’ (PASS) School Safety and Security Guidelines for K-12 Schools. Known as the multilayer approach to school security, it helps improve the overall efficacy of a comprehensive school safety and security plan. Considering data from the K-12 School Shooting Database reveals 80% of school shootings occur outside, having several physical security measures leading up to a school can be crucial to a comprehensive safer school desig...
